After two LEGO UCS sets were born last year, half of the LEGO Star Wars world is wondering which Best Lego Star Wars Sets await us in 2018. Because one thing is sure: it will not be too long before the first UCS set is officially announced this year.
Here I try to gather all the latest news and rumors about upcoming Best Lego Star Wars Sets.
Two Best Lego Star Wars Sets for 2018 are very likely
First of all the numbers: In the last two years two UCS sets from the Star Wars series were released: one in spring (May) and one later in the year. And most of the time the first set was more of a “smaller” set, while the other one was much bigger:
- 2016: Lego 75098 Assault on Hoth (April / May) and 75159 Death Star (October)
- 2017: 75144 Snowspeeder (May) and 75192 Millennium Falcon (September)
There are some indications that this will again look like this year. We can expect the following two sets in 2018:
- 2018: lego 75181 (May) and lego 75222 (September / October)
The two set numbers are already fixed, according to brickset.com. Which two sets it could be, let’s take a look now.
LEGO 75181: What could that be?
If you take a look at the LEGO Group’s strategy for the Best Lego Star Wars Sets in the last few years, two things will become clear very quickly.
First, almost only sets from the original trilogy (i.e., episodes IV, V, and VI) are released. And secondly: There are always new editions:
- Snowspeeder: 10129 becomes Lego 75144
- X-Wing: 7191 becomes 10240
- Death Star: 10188 becomes 75159
- Millennium Falcon: Lego 10179 becomes 75192
Both are no miracle. The original trilogy usually has fans among the Star Wars fans, as the movies are real classics. LEGO addresses above all older customers with the Best Lego Star Wars Sets, who especially know the old films. And also the new editions are significant from LEGO because on the used market one can recognize, which partly achieves the old UCS sets for prices. The demand for new versions of the sometimes non-existent cult sets is therefore enormous.
Which (old) set from the original trilogy would be in question here in a rather low price range for a new edition? I think of the following sets:
- 10019: Rebel Blockade Runner
- 7181: Interceptor
- 10134: Y Wing Fighter
- 10175: Vader’s TIE Advanced
- 10174: Imperial AT-ST
The TIE Interceptor and Vader’s TIE Advanced are unlikely, as until recently there was still the standard TIE Fighter as UCS version. The Imperial AT-ST also seems doubtful, since the set from today’s perspective is almost “too small” with its original 1,068 stones. Stay the Y-Wing and the Rebel Blockade Runner also check lego retiring soon in 2018
My tip: The UCS Y-Wing
The rumor mill is currently pretty much in the agreement which set awaits us here: The LEGO 75181 UCS Y-Wing. I, too, cling to this very clearly and expect a re-release of the Y-Wing set during the spring – probably around May 4, to coincide with the upcoming LEGO Star Wars promo promotions on International Star Wars Day.
There are two reasons for my tip on the UCS Y-Wing with the set number 75181 this year: First, there was probably a leak from the inside of LEGO, which has confirmed a UCS Y-Wing in a company-internal catalog. I only know that from hearsay and therefore cannot prove it. On the other hand, there are photos of two upcoming mini-figures that seem to have been leaked from a production facility in China. I can not (and will not) show you the pictures here, but the photos look very much like a “Gold Leader” pilot and an Astrotech droid 😉
But aside from all the rumors and hints from third parties, a re-release of the UCS Y-Wing for 2018 just seems very sensible. The collectors are hot on the set, and the prices on the second-hand market are buzzing. Reason enough for the LEGO Group to supply new sets here.
What else could it be?
The Rebel Blockade Runner is also a popular re-release for many fans. The used prices for the set are very high, and many AFOLs are longing for a new edition.
Since there are not any hints regarding the blockade runner yet, I’m more into typing here in the coming years. I honestly do not doubt that there will be a new release. Because the set has many fans and looks great in its original version!
LEGO 75222: The second Best Lego Star Wars Sets?
Just as exciting (or even more exciting) is the question of what awaits us as the second UCS set in 2018. What is behind the set with the number 75222, which will appear in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2018?
Is it Cloud City?
Again, the rumor mill has a clear favorite: LEGO Star Wars 75222 UCS Cloud City. The only genuinely credible basis for the rumors is a January 2018 LEGO Ideas video in which 2:20 minutes and 2:29 minutes each have two bells whistling, all referring to a Cloud City or Bespin City UCS set can. As the Promobricks colleagues aptly explain, the LEGO Ideas spokesperson tells in the video why LEGO Idea sets can be rejected.
One of these reasons may be that one set is too close to another set that is still in development internally. And one of the suggested (but unauthorized) sets is titled “I Am Your Father” and recreates the iconic scene from Star Wars Episode V., So the explanation could well refer to this set.
There has been much speculation as to whether the LEGO Ideas spokesman might have said “Bespin City” or “Bespin Set” in the video. I asked a friendly lip reader, and he thought that was possible, but he was not sure. So I sat down and made my little video to get to the bottom of it:
If you can not see the video now, I summarize it: Yes, I strongly assume that the press spokesman said in the video the words “Bespin City.” But: He also says that the set will probably not be on the shelves for one to two years, which makes me more confident of being released in 2019 or even 2020.
What can it be instead?
If it’s not UCS Cloud City, what we’re expecting in 2018, what could it be? Another hotly awaited set in a slightly higher price range is still a new UCS Star Destroyer. A few months ago I wrote an article about the UCS star destroyer for 2018, which dealt intensively with the topic.
I still think of a star destroyer in the classic look for a probable candidate for the second UCS set in 2018. Of course, I’m not sure, but since the demand here is vast, the size could come in about and the template now already 16 years old, I think it is very likely – provided Cloud City does not land yet this year on the shelf.
And now you! What do you think of the current rumors and what do you wish for Best Lego Star Wars Sets 2018 and the years to come as UCS sets? Do you like the LEGO course with many new editions, or would you rather have new sets? Write it in the comments!
